Eco School

We are proud to have an Eco School committee which is pupil-led with children from each class in Year 1 - 6, working together to make a difference to our environment.

We are blessed with having such extensive and beautiful school grounds, including a pond, Forest School area, bug hotel, field and many trees to inspire us!

Go Green Day : July 2026

We were delighted to host our recent Go Green Day, a wonderful opportunity for children across the school to celebrate environmental awareness and explore ways to care for the world around them.

Throughout the day, every year group took part in activities designed to help them connect with nature, think about sustainability and appreciate the environment around them.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Our youngest learners enjoyed spending time at the pond, exploring the natural world and observing the wildlife in this special outdoor space.

Year 1

Year 1 embraced a variety of eco-friendly activities, including junk modelling, making bird feeders and enjoying creative play with the PlayPod. They also took story time outdoors, sharing the book George Saves the World by Lunchtime and discussing how small actions can help protect our planet.

Year 2

Year 2 took their learning outside for a day of creativity and exploration. They practised mindfulness sketching, focusing carefully on the details they could see around them, took part in outdoor maths activities and enjoyed an exciting orienteering challenge.

Year 3

Year 3 explored their surroundings through art, heading outside to sketch the environment using scrap paper and demonstrating how recycled materials can be used creatively.

Year 4

Year 4 focused on the importance of bees and pollinators. In the forest area, they created bee hotels and bee puppets using natural and recycled materials. They also made beautiful natural suncatchers using flowers, leaves and grasses found in the outdoor environment.

Year 5

Year 5 spent time connecting with the natural world around them. The children created detailed leaf rubbings, sketched interesting natural objects such as acorns, leaves and trees, and took time to carefully observe their surroundings.

They also paused to listen to the sounds of nature and reflect on how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful environment to enjoy and protect. It was a peaceful and inspiring experience that encouraged creativity, mindfulness and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

Year 6

Year 6 participated in a mindfulness activity centred around their five senses. Using their oracy skills, they shared and discussed what they could hear, see, smell and feel in their surroundings.

Their conversations led to thoughtful discussions about the impact of noise on our well-being and environment, particularly the effects of traffic and cars. The children also revisited their learning about climate change, making important links between their previous studies and the world around them today.

Celebrating Our Environment

Go Green Day provided a fantastic opportunity for children to learn, explore and reflect on the importance of looking after our planet. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm shown by all our pupils and the thoughtful conversations that took place throughout the day. Together, we continue to develop a greater understanding of how we can all play our part in creating a more sustainable future.

Go Green Day coming soon

Our Eco School committee are working hard to plan a Go Green Day for the summer term. Children are invited to come to school wearing something green, and the day will have an eco-awareness focus, with a variety of learning opportunities.

Pen recycling

The eco-committee has been concentrating on recycling at the moment. They have made sure the bins in their classrooms are clearly labelled and the children in their classes know how to sort their rubbish. We have also been collecting old pens and have sent the first box off to be recycled. We were excited to get an email back to say it has been received and we are now ready to send our next box.

October 2025

On Wednesday 8th October, Carymoor Environmental Trust joined us in school to run some workshops to teach some of our children about reducing food waste and increasing recycling in our area.

They also ran an event at pick up time where parents/carers were given the opportunity to chat with their staff about any questions they had, collect a food waste bin or caddy, and take home a free roll of caddy liners.

October 2024

The eco-schools committee have started to work on the plans we made after completing the eco-schools survey. We joined a Forest School session and began making a dead hedge. This will not only become a sturdy fence, and a perfect place to put our cuttings but it will also become a home for some of our woodland animals, including hedgehogs and a large variety of bugs.

We have lots of plans for future meetings too!

Mrs Hart, our Eco School lead, wrote to all parents/carers about our exciting new initiative:

I am writing to you to share some exciting news, this year our school has made the decision to work towards Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, you can find out more on the Eco-Schools website here: https://www.eco-schools.org.uk/

With the world beginning to experience the effects of climate change; different species of plant and animals becoming extinct every day; and micro-plastics being found in the most remote locations on Earth - now, is the time to educate future generations about the impact of our actions on the planet we call home.

The Eco-Schools programme does this through providing a simple seven-step framework that has been designed to raise awareness of environmental issues whilst empowering young people to make a positive difference by taking a lead on environmental actions and projects in their school and local community.

Within Eco-Schools’ simple framework young people have the freedom to decide on the environmental issues they would like to tackle, represented by ten Eco-Schools topics. Once young people have chosen their topics, they decide what actions they would like to take and how they are going to involve their school and community. The seven step process takes around one academic year to complete and culminates in an Eco-Schools’ assessor looking over a school’s application and evidence, with a view to recognising and celebrating their achievements.

The Eco-Schools programme began in 1994, is delivered in more than 70 countries around the world and in England is operated by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The programme not only positively impacts our planet (for example schools participating in the programme planted 50,188 trees during the last academic year), it also benefits young people, building teamwork and leadership skills whilst increasing confidence and reducing eco-anxiety.

As a key part of the Eco-Schools process is involving our entire school and wider community, we wanted to get in touch to let you know about our involvement. We also wanted to let you know what to expect over the coming months: regular updates in our school newsletter and other channels; invitations to participate in environmental events and projects; and increasingly conscientious young people.
