Year 2 - Goldfinch

Diversity Day - Kenya  July 2026

We had an amazing day learning about Kenya.

We learnt about:

Some of the different tribes, including the Maasai, Kikuyu and Kalanjin and what they are famous for.

Food eaten in Kenya, including ugali, githeri and tilapia.

Traditional dress, baby carriers and some amazing Kenyan athletes.

The Big 5 (lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards and rhinoceroses) and the wildebeest migration.

We drew maps, coloured flags and learnt some Swahili.

We also learnt a song, a dance and a traditional game!

Go Green Day - July 2026

We enjoyed our Go Green Day and the opportunity to appreciate our environment and how we look after it. We talked about how we recycle at school and home, how we save water (all children said they turn off the tap while brushing their teeth!) and how we make sure lights are off if we aren’t in a room.

We took time to go outside and find something small to sketch. We spent time looking at the detail before we started to draw. We also took our maths lesson outside and even managed to have an orienteering session – making full use of our school grounds.

Sports Week June 2026

We have had a great time celebrating Health and Sports Week. Starting with sports day, the children have had a very active week learning a new dance, having a tennis lesson and they even ran a mini marathon! They have also learnt about sun safety, road safety and water safety. We have had many visitors sharing their stories and we were so lucky with the weather!

Sports Day June 2026

Thanks for everyone who came to support the children during their sports day. It was a hot one! Well done to all the children for taking part.

Character descriptions - May 2026

The children have enjoyed writing character descriptions after creating their own characters based on the book The Pirates Next Door by Jonny Duddle.

They have worked together to generate adjective lists and thought about what their character looks like, what they are wearing, what their personality is like and what they like to do. They challenged themselves to use interesting vocabulary – why use the word ‘nice’ when you can say ‘delightful’?

Easter Parade - April 2026

Wow! The children had a wonderful afternoon parading their Easter accessories. It was lovely to be out in the sunshine!

Thank you everyone for all of your support this half term.

Our trip to Bristol Zoo Project - 26th March 2026

Year 2 had a lovely day visiting Bristol Zoo. After learning all about meerkats we got to see them for real. They were running around and keeping watch for danger! We took part in an activity with Ben discussing all types of animals and even helped solve a crime (the penguin did it!).

We also saw giraffes, zebras, ostriches, bears, lynx and many more animals.

The children all behaved so well – we are so proud of them.

They had a great time with their friends at the zoo.

World Book Day - March 2026

We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day!

We visited other classes to listen to a variety of stories through the day.

We also invited our grown ups into school to share books with them. We even used the puppets we had made in our DT lessons and read books to them!

DT - Puppets - February 2026

Our unit in DT this half term was making puppets. After looking at different types of puppets and practising our sewing skills, the children designed their own hand puppet. They used the felt to shape their puppet and for the decoration. The children used either a running or over stitch (and sometimes both!)

Our trip to Wells Cathedral - December 2025

We have had a wonderful day at Wells Cathedral. The Christmas trees looked beautiful and we learned a lot about the building. Did you know it was built 900 years ago? We looked at the fabulous stained glass windows. Our guide told us that some people couldn't read or write all that time ago so stories from The Bible were told in pictures in the stained glass. She also told us that some soldiers came, a long time ago, and broke the windows. The glass broke and instead of throwing it away the windows were made again but not in the right order. These are called the 'jigsaw windows'.

We enjoyed looking around the cathedral and saw stone carvings all around, even on the ceiling! We were lucky enough to watch the special clock chime at 11.00. There are model jousters that twirl around the top and the clock even tells you what the moon will look like in the sky. It is one of the oldest working clocks in the world!

There was a lovely nativity in the cathedral. We looked carefully to spot all the characters in the story. We also saw them in the stained glass windows.

We did some sketches of the interesting things we saw.

We made a badge with the nativity story on it and also made stained glass windows of our own.

Carnival at school!  24th October 2025

We have been enjoying the end of our half term by showcasing some of our work in the school carnival. It was such a shame about the unpredictable weather but we were still able to share the fun with a few year groups!

Our art October 2025

The children are all very proud of the African sunsets they painted. They used the skills they had been learning through the term and they look amazing!

Sharing stories with year 3 - 10th October 2025

This week, Jay class were excited to share their amazing stories inspired by the short film 'Dream Giver' with Goldfinch class. Everyone listened carefully as the children read their imaginative pieces filled with magic, adventure and dreams coming to life!

Goldfinch class were a fantastic audience and gave some lovely feedback.

Carymoor Visit 8th October 2025

Today we had an exciting visitor in school. Gary came from Carymoor Recycling Centre to talk to us about recycling our waste. He told us about how to recycle different materials and where to put them. He told us where they are taken and what happens next. He talked about the '3 Rs' reuse, recycle and reduce.

In class we practised and met burpy bin! Gary even had a song for us to learn.

It was great fun and we learnt a lot!

Science and Computing with year 4   07.10.25

The children from Year 4 helped the children from Year 2 to log on and use j2edata Branch to create branch databases to sort and group animals according to their characteristics.

Art Friday 3rd October 2025

The children have been investigating colour mixing in art over the last few weeks. They have changed the tint or tone of their colours by adding white or black paints.  They have experimented with mixing the varied colours of a sunset and they have now painted the backgrounds for their finished pieces.

We will now move on to sketching, then painting trees. The children will paint a tree silhouette onto their sunsets.

We are so proud of how the children spent time deciding the colours and shades they wanted to use.
