How to apply for your child to start school for the first time:
A child can start school in September after they turn 4.
Please click on this link to apply to Somerset Council. The online form for starting school applications opened on 29 September 2025.
If you applied online by 15 January 2026, you will receive an email with the outcome of your application on 16 April 2026. If you applied using a paper application form your outcome will be sent out by second class post on 16 April 2026.
For applications received by 1 May 2026, Somerset Council will send outcomes on 5 June 2026. These will be sent by second class post.
Applications received after 1 May 2026 will be processed by somerset Council in strict date order of receipt and outcomes sent out after 5 June 2026. These will be sent by second class post.
From 16 April 2026 you can also view the outcome of your application by logging into the Citizen Portal.
