Times tables
Times Table Rockstars
Every child has a log in to TTRockstars. We use this to motivate and enable children to practise their times tables daily. Please click on this link for a parents guide.
At St John and St Francis, we have a progression that the children work through in class to learn their timetables.
- By the end of year 2, the children should know the x2, x5, and x10 tables
- By the end of year 3, the children should also know the x3, x4, and x8
- By the end of year 4, the children should also be able to answer questions in the x6, x11, x9, x7 and x12.
Assuming that children know that 0x anything is always 0 and 1x something will stay the same, it sounds like year 4 have the most to do, but in fact, if you look at this graphic, you’ll see that:
- in year 2, there are 30 facts.
- in year 3, there are 30 facts
- in year 4, there are 30 facts
This is based on the idea that children are making connections between things that they know and are encouraged to think about these facts. After learning 2×7 in year 2, the children will not need to learn this in year 4, there are in fact only 7 facts in the x7 table that they have not seen yet.
This video helps to make this point and explores some of the different ways that we would encourage children to think about multiplication calculations before they jump in and start writing things down.
