Art and Design at St John and St Francis Church School

INTENT:
All our children are Artists! We want all children to embed knowledge in art and design over time so that they will develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile, sensory qualities of materials and processes, discuss their own work, and that of their peers by making references to artists that have inspired them. Children are encouraged to take creative risks, develop personal expression and to learn from their journey.
IMPLEMENTATION:
We assess prior learning in art through ongoing formative assessment, looking at past work in learning journeys.
We teach art using Key Threshold concepts, which are taught using progressive objectives (milestones) across 7 years. These objectives are outlined to the children as Learning Outcomes and Success Criteria and use deliberate practise, which are repeated for progression to embed knowledge over time.
We have written our own Art and Design progression document using the National Curriculum and tailored to the needs of our children.
We sequence the learning possibilities in art by weekly lessons (half termly). Our aim is to enhance pupil’s lives through fun, inspiration, creativity and self-expression in art and design.
We look at the ‘Quality of input, NOT data output’: how much are children exploring knowledge concepts? Depth of learning and repeated, deliberate practise. We talk to the children, using effective questioning to tease out the knowledge they have learned. We look in their books, which shows pride in learning and children’s curiosity to deepen learning further.
IMPACT:
Children leave our school with secure, embedded understanding of art based on the following concepts:
- The ability to use visual language skilfully and convincingly (for example, line, shape, pattern, colour, texture, form) to express emotions, interpret observations, convey insights and accentuate their individuality.
- The ability to communicate fluently in visual and tactile form.
- The ability to draw confidently and adventurously from observation, memory and imagination.
- The ability to explore and invent marks, develop and deconstruct ideas and communicate perceptively and powerfully through purposeful drawing in 2D, 3D or digital media.
- A good knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers.
- The ability to think and act like creative practitioners by using their knowledge and understanding to inform, inspire and interpret ideas, observations and feelings.
- Independence, initiative and originality that they can use to develop their creativity.
- The ability to select and use materials, processes and techniques skilfully and inventively to realise intentions and capitalise on the unexpected.
- The ability to reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate their own work and that of others.
Our end goal is for all pupils to acquire a passion for and a commitment to the subject of Art and Design.
